UBC's Orange Shirt Day March

Honouring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Last Saturday, the UBC community gathered for the third annual intergenerational march on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. The day recognizes the legacy and survivors of residential schools.

The event, organized by the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and Faculty of Applied Science, began in front of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre with hundreds of people in orange shirts crowding the steps.

“On this day [we] commemorate the survivors, their children [and] the ones who didn't come home,” said Dana-Lyn Mackenzie, Senior Manager EDI and Indigeneity at the Faculty of Applied Science and member of the Hwlitsum First Nation.
